While I don't assign a ton of math homework, it is important this year that students begin to review and practice classroom skills independently at home. These skills are especially useful when students find a lesson challenging. We have discussed many ways to review and practice in class including the homework that is assigned (usually time is given to begin in class), coming to math clinic to review with me (Mondays and Thursday at second break), signing out a textbook to review at home after a lesson, using Khan Academy, playing Prodigy online or reviewing notes and practice problems given in class. At home, math can also be finding the math in their real world - where in media or day to day life does math help them to make sense of information? All of the websites in the "Helpful Links" tab can be great practice at home.
This year, we will also be using projects in math class at the end of units. These projects are just as important as tests when evaluating how students understand the big ideas of a unit and their ability to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. While students have enough time given to complete the projects in class, they are also encouraged to plan and complete any extra work necessary at home to ensure they are submitting their best work.
